Technology and cyber

Two pages. Evidence over stack lists.

We read 14 individual Australian technology advertisements one at a time. None of them asked for a GitHub link, a portfolio or an external profile. What they asked for was evidence of what you built, what it carried, and what changed because of it.

The portfolio question, answered with a count: zero of the 14 advertisements we read and recorded requested or invited a GitHub link, personal site or profile. Every GitHub mention was a tool the team uses, in a requirements list. Include a link if you are proud of it and it is current. It is not the missing piece anyone told you it was.

Questions, answered honestly

Should I include a GitHub or portfolio link?

Only if it is current and you want it read. Zero of the 14 Australian technology advertisements we read and recorded asked for one. A stale repository with a half-finished tutorial project does more harm than no link at all.

Is two pages really right for a senior engineer?

Yes, for private-sector roles. None of the 14 tech ads we read set a page limit, and the Australian convention is two. The exceptions we found were government and defence applications that stated their own ceiling, and we write to whatever the advertisement says.

How should I handle a security clearance?

State the level you hold and that it is current. Do not publish the number or the detail. If you do not hold one, say you are eligible if you are, since a clearance needs citizenship and an employer to sponsor it and no candidate can obtain one alone.

Do I need a cover letter for a technology role?

Rarely in the private sector: one of 14 advertisements asked. For government and defence-adjacent employers the equivalent is a pitch against selection criteria, usually with a stated page or character limit, and that is a different document written a different way.

Do you have a technology-specific guide?

Not yet. The resume service covers technology roles now, and the APS handbook covers government technology applications. A dedicated guide will appear only when it exists.

Can I just say I am willing to obtain a security clearance?

It is a weaker line than most candidates think. An AGSVA clearance requires Australian citizenship and an entity willing to sponsor it, so no individual can obtain one on their own initiative. State your citizenship and any clearance you already hold, and leave the aspiration off.

The advertisement names citizenship or work rights but not a clearance. Does that matter?

Yes, it is a separate and more common screen. Five of the 14 technology advertisements we read and recorded named citizenship or work rights without naming a clearance level at all, a lighter bar than a formal clearance but still worth answering plainly.

An advertisement mentions GitHub. Does that mean I should link my profile?

Not necessarily. Every GitHub mention we found named the platform as a tool inside a requirements list, such as GitHub Actions or GitHub for CI/CD, rather than an instruction to review your repositories. Read the sentence around it before assuming it is asking for a link.

A resume for your field

Specimens, built to the rules on this page. Every person, employer and achievement in them is invented and labelled invented, and the craft is the real thing. We publish them as images rather than files, so they can be read and not repurposed.

Specimen resume, Senior software engineer
Senior software engineer. Outcomes above experience, and no portfolio link, because none of the 14 advertisements asked for one.
Specimen resume, Cyber security analyst, cleared
Cyber security analyst, cleared. Clearance stated at level with no detail, and certifications carrying their expiry.

How we decided what belongs on these pages is set out in how we know this.
