We read 18 individual Australian mining advertisements one at a time. Sixteen of them named a specific ticket, licence or statutory certificate, and twelve stated a roster. A mining resume that buries those at the bottom is answering a different question from the one being asked.
What we found about cover letters, even though we sell them: one of the 18 mining advertisements we read and recorded asked for a cover letter, and it was a camp services role. Do I need a cover letter for a mining job?
Usually not. Of the 18 Australian mining advertisements we read and recorded, one asked for a cover letter. If the advertisement asks, or you are approaching an employer directly, a letter earns its place. Otherwise the resume is where the work belongs.
Where should my tickets and licences go?
At the top, in their own labelled block, with the class or unit code and the currency date. Sixteen of the 18 advertisements we read named a specific ticket, licence or certificate, and four required a police clearance issued within the last six months. A screener checking currency should not have to hunt for it.
Should I put my roster availability on the resume?
Yes, if you have a preference or a constraint. Twelve of the 18 advertisements stated a roster. Naming what you can work, and your notice period, removes a question that otherwise gets asked by phone.
Do you write for statutory roles?
Yes. A statutory certificate of competency and the job title it entitles you to hold are two different lines, and we keep them separate. The certificate is the credential, the role is the experience, and conflating them is the most common error we see in supervisory resumes.
Do you have a mining-specific guide?

How current does my police clearance need to be for a mining role?
Very, on some advertisements. Four of the 18 mining advertisements we read and recorded required a clearance issued within the last six months, so a clean clearance from two years ago may not satisfy the requirement as written. State the issue date next to it.
Is DEMIRS still the mine safety regulator in Western Australia?
No, even though plenty of training provider pages still say so. WA mines safety regulation moved from DEMIRS to WorkSafe, inside the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety, on 1 July 2025. A resume naming DEMIRS as the current regulator is citing a name that stopped performing that function over a year ago.
What is happening with Queensland's certificate of competency scheme?
It is mid-transition. Resources Safety and Health Queensland's Board of Examiners scheme has been mandatory since 10 June 2025, full assessment phases in from 1 June 2026, and mandatory certificate holding for the roles it covers completes on 1 June 2030. State which stage you are at rather than writing working toward certification alone.
