Does the APS use AI in recruitment? What the 2026 principles actually say
Some APS agencies use AI tools in hiring. None may let the machine decide, and they must tell you when AI is used.
The 16 APS job families, and what work actually sits in each one
The APS sorts every job in the service into sixteen families. Knowing which one you belong to changes what you search for, what you read, and what a panel expects you to say.
Selection criteria: the STAR method panels actually reward
Most STAR answers spend their word count on the wrong letters. How to compress situation and task, and let action and result win the assessment.
Questions, answered honestly
Do you write for every APS agency?
Yes. We map to whichever framework the agency cites in the job pack, current work-level standards or the Integrated Leadership System, and calibrate the language to your classification, APS4 through EL2.
I have never applied to the APS. Where do I start?
The APS Application Handbook. It walks the whole process from reading the job pack to what happens after you submit, including a real agency marking sheet.
Do the guides replace the selection criteria service?
For plenty of applicants, yes, particularly with a free weekend to put into it. When the classification is senior or the deadline is close, the criteria service starts from $290.
Does the STAR kit cover EL1 and EL2 interviews?
Yes. 50 of the 150 questions are written specifically for EL1 and EL2, where panels test judgement and people leadership rather than task delivery.
Will an AI tool screen my application?
Some APS agencies use AI to help with notes and first-cut reports. The selection panel and the delegate make the decision, and that is set out in the Commission's own 2026 principles.
Is my resume or my pitch the document that actually gets marked?
The written response. On one department's official scoring sheet the assessment methods were the applicant response, a work sample test and an interview, and the resume was a required upload that was not one of them. Your resume is what the claims in your response have to be traceable to, so build them as a matched pair.
Does what a panel expects change between APS5, APS6 and EL1?
Yes, specifically. An APS5 answer needs to show you work independently once the direction is set. An APS6 answer needs to show you owned the thing, including when it went sideways. An EL1 answer needs to show you set the direction other people work to, and that your decisions reached past your own team. Pitching a strong APS6 story as an EL1 answer, or the reverse, is a mismatch a panel notices.
Where does your evidence about APS hiring come from?
The published frameworks, the ILS and the current work-level standards, plus our handbook and selection criteria work with APS applicants every week. We have not coded a sample of APS job advertisements the way we have for healthcare, mining and technology, and we would rather say that plainly than blur the two kinds of evidence together.
